If you live in Oceanside, you have watched Coast Highway change so gradually that it is easy to miss what has actually happened. This summer is the exception. Three separate anniversaries have landed on top of each other, and each one has pulled a specific building, event, or business back into the spotlight. The 1888 house you have driven past a thousand times is a gelato shop again. The Junior Seau Pier Amphitheater is hosting a federal semiquincentennial festival. The longboard contest, in its 41st year, has become tangled up with a museum exhibit on the Hawaiian origins of the sport.
The reason to pay attention is not that any single one of these is a destination. It is that, taken together, they give a resident a reason to walk the corridor with fresh eyes and see how much of the food and civic scene has quietly matured while the anniversaries were doing the marketing.
The restored Victorian cottage on North Pacific Street has been the same building for 138 years, but this summer it changed tenants in a way worth noticing.
